Kelty Redwing 3100 (aka Kelty Redwing 50): Where To Get It On Sale

Kelty Redwing 3100The Kelty Redwing 3100 (also referred to as the Kelty 50) is a fantastic backpack. I do a lot of hiking and camping and this is the first Kelty internal frame backpack I’ve ever owned, but I’m really impressed with its features for a short term camp.

I bought mine from Amazon and it arrived quickly and was well packaged. I’ll cover some of its best features here because I think they’re worth mentioning, but there are probably more that I haven’t put in!

Here are the best features in a nutshell:

* Large main compartment & many little pockets for accessories, lined for protection
* Front pocket big enough to keep first aid kit
* Vertical strip and straps on front & bottom
* Lightweight aluminum frame
* Water bladder with hoses

Now I’ll go over those great features in a bit more detail…

The backpack has an aluminum frame which is lightweight but sturdy and, dare I say, adaptable to your back (by which I mean you can bend it). But the frame gives it a really good sense of support without it feeling like it is dragging on your back. This was the thing that drew me to Kelty Redwing 3100 in the first place as I have a bit of bad back so was looking for something in this area.

There is a space in the frame to place two water bladders with hoses that emerge from the top and attach to the straps so you can remain hydrated. A friend of mine commented that this would make it heavier, but of course you need to be carrying the water anyway so I don’t think it does.

There are straps all over this pack for you to attach things to with carabinas and on the main packet there is a large velcro strip too. These little ‘chains’ of straps are attached to the material regularly so they will remain secure (the stitching on everything is really good – it feels solid and well-made) and easy to hang multiple things from (I have flashlights, a chalk pouch and my mapping gear attached at the moment).

The main compartment is very spacious – it holds enough for me for a short camp really adequately and the zip is strong, so I don’t feel as though I’m about to lose things with it popping open. There is easily enough space for a full set of clothes, my camera and food and my jetboil equipment.

The front pocket (or is that the back pocket?) is also surprisingly large with the main space big enough to hold my first aid kit (don’t leave home without it!) easily.

Then we come to the bit I really like. In this space are also multiple ‘accessory pockets’ designed to hold things like pens, mobile phones, chargers and all those useful gadgets that these days I don’t like to leave home without. They are fleece-lined too, which gives them some impact safety and keeps them intact which I really appreciate.

The sides have what are called ‘flow-through’ pockets on them (pockets that you can expand) which are easily large enough to hold a water bottle or similar sized equipment.

Kelty Redwing 50I am really happy with my Kelty Redwing 3100 and would certainly recommend it to other users; it’s also available at a great price on Amazon. In fact, Amazon reviewers have given it a 5-star rating (out of a possible five stars), and I agree with them.
